DC Universe Presents Vol. 2: Vandal Savage feels more relevant than the first volume, and overall sharper writing makes it a better read. There's a lot of content here, though some will be reprints for DC Comics readers who play the field; also the illusion of relevancy doesn't necessarily promise relevancy itself, which may be DC Universe Presents's biggest disadvantage.

The second volume of the New 52 anthology series includes DC Universe Presents #9-12 (James Robinson and Bernard Chang's three-part Vandal Savage story, plus a Kid Flash story by Fabian Nicieza) plus two related Kid Flash back-up stories from Teen Titans, and the DC Universe Presents #0 Zero Month issue. Five-and-a-piece issues is a small trade, relatively, despite that the multiple origin stories in the Zero Month issue might make the book feel longer. At the same time, all the Teen Titans material is also reprinted in Teen Titans Vol. 2: The Culling, and the Mr. Terrific short story from the zero issue is reprinted in Earth 2 Vol. 2: Tower of Fate, so there was a considerable part of the material that I, having read those two other trades, simply skipped.

Parenthetically, I agree with this collecting method. On one hand, were I just a reader of DC Universe Presents, this trade gives me the next sequential issues of the series without skipping anything, and also includes the related Teen Titans material so I don't feel like I'm missing anything. On the other hand, were I just a reader of the Teen Titans or Earth 2 series, those trades collect material from their series from around the DC Universe (the series itself plus the Presents material), so there, too, I don't feel like I'm missing anything. As a reader of all three series, unfortunately I end up buying some of the same material twice, but the completist in me appreciates that each book strives to provide a complete reading experience. (I don't feel exactly the same way when it comes to collecting different chapters of crossovers in different books, but this method works well here in part because DC Universe Presents is an anthology title.)

The titular story in Presents Vol. 2 is Robinson's take on Vandal Savage and his daughter. The premise of such is loaded for a number of reasons -- that Gail Simone introduced a daughter of Vandal Savage herself in the cult classic Secret Six series; that DC cancelled Secret Six shortly before the advent of the New 52 and replaced it with a seemingly less detailed, less character-driven Suicide Squad series; that Simone's Scandal Savage was a rare lesbian character among DC's less-diverse pantheon. There's no concern of prejudice on Robinson's part here -- the same writer has utilized gay characters prominently in his Starman, Justice League, and Earth 2 titles -- but the idea of a daughter of Vandal Savage in the New 52 who was not Scandal Savage gave me pause, at least. (I grant that the introduction of Savage's daughter Kass Sage in the New 52 does not negate that daughter Scandal might still be running around somewhere off-screen, but we've had no hints to that effect so far.)

Still, I have tried to be a good sport about the "new" in the New 52, I like Robinson's writing, and generally I liked his three-part Vandal Savage story. In positing Kass Sage as an FBI agent and Savage as an imprisoned serial killer (if also immortal caveman) who helps the FBI catch a copy-cat, Robinson knowingly evokes a Silence of the Lambs aesthetic, and this is a fun dynamic to see set in the DC Universe, especially with the added drama of Savage and Sage being father and daughter.

The first chapter is specifically the best, and where the Hannibal Lecter vibe is the strongest, as Savage and Sage trade barbs between the walls of a prison cell. I thought Robinson stepped on the story a bit, however, at the point in which they revealed the metahuman culprit. Savage is, of course, more than human, but not in an overt way, such that a murder mystery plot with Savage and Sage comes off as mostly "realistic" (as Hannibal Lecter's adventures are mostly "realistic" even as Lecter's abilities seem sometimes preternatural); but when Robinson reveals the actual killer, drawn by Chang to look a bit like a wizened Scooby-Doo bad guy, the story becomes more fanciful than I'd have liked. The story is appropriately suspenseful and bloody, another selling point (Hannibal Season 2 can't get here soon enough) but in all I didn't think Chang's work was quite as atmospheric as the story required.

Ultimately I enjoyed the premise and set-up of Robinson's story, and I wouldn't mind reading about the further adventures of Kass Sage, though with Robinson's departure from DC Comics it seems less and less likely Kass Sage will ever make the page again. This is unfortunate, and it also points out a significant difficulty with this volume of DC Universe Presents. All the stories here seem to have potential to continue elsewhere; the Vandal Savage story, for one, but also the Zero Month origin stories -- Hawk and Dove, the Blackhawks, and OMAC, among others -- but of them, probably the Mr. Terrific story is the only one that will. As an anthology, it is DC Universe Presents's job to tease storylines that, were they to catch on, could continue in other books, but as few of these have caught on (and DC Universe Presents is now cancelled), few of them ever will.

The Zero Month origin stories are, in their own right, also good. The OMAC tale gives us one more shot of Keith Giffen's faux-Kirby art, plus suggests a connection between Brother Eye and Batman. The Hawk and Dove story actually answers a question left unresolved at the end of Sterling Gates and Rob Liefeld's Hawk and Dove series, namely what the connection was between Doves Don Hall and Dawn Granger; the Blackhawk story resolves how Lady Blackhawk lost her eye. The difficulty is that each of these stories (with the exception of the Deadman short) suggests it will continue on elsewhere, but likely never will. I do appreciate that DC gave each of these cancelled series the opportunity to tell one last story (suggesting, perhaps, that there will always be a place for your favorite characters in the New 52, somewhere, someday), but it's unfortunate that the stories raise more questions instead of bringing the series to a fuller close.

It remains to be seen, therefore, whether DC's new Secret Origins series that effectively replaces DC Universe Presents will be a pleasure or an annoyance. Will it, like the Presents Zero Month issue, propose storylines that won't go anywhere? Will it be a vehicle for creators to retcon origins established by earlier teams (will Greg Pak revise Scott Lobdell's Superman origin, or will Tony Bedard revise Michael Green and Mike Johnson's Supergirl origin), fracturing New 52 continuity in the way that the pre-Flashpoint continuity eventually fractured? Or can DC keep consistency among the Secret Origins stories such to give us new insights into the characters that we didn't have before? I think the answers to these questions will largely determine how long Secret Origins lasts or if it eventually goes the way of DC Universe Presents.

DC Universe Presents Vol. 2: Vandal Savage is a satisfactory read, especially for fans of James Robinson or one of the cancelled series that bows out here. But I referred the other day to Sword of Sorcery: Amethyst as a good, long book to take on a plane ride; Presents Vol. 2 is just the opposite, a quick read that offers more a taste of what could have been than a meal unto itself.

DC Universe Presents Volume 1: Deadman and Challengers of the UnknownThe first collection of the DC Universe Presents New 52 anthology series offers a five-part Deadman story by Paul Jenkins and Bernard Chang, and a three-part Challengers of the Unknown story by DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio with art by Jerry Ordway. Of these, Jenkins's is stronger than DiDio's (though DiDio's is somewhat improved from hit-or-miss run on Outsiders).

But even though Jenkins's Deadman story is entertaining, neither story is helped by this anthology format -- the Deadman story would seem to make changes to the character, but puts everything back the way it was before the story ends; the Challengers story would seem to relaunch the team, but cuts off just as that team finds purpose. The result is two stories that ultimately don't matter or accomplish anything, and if this demonstrates the tack of the DC Universe Presents series as a whole, it's not hard to see why the title was ultimately cancelled.

Paul Jenkin's Deadman story is a spooky, funny, philosophical tale that works, for the most part. Jenkins tweaks past Deadman lore early on, establishing that rather than possessing people at random or searching for his own killer, Deadman is drawn from body-to-body Quantum Leap-style by the god Rama, to right a certain amount of wrongs before Deadman can move on to the afterlife. Further, some of the people Deadman have possessed have "remained with him" (though what this means is vague in the book), giving Deadman the sense something's amiss. In some nicely subtle scenes, Deadman determines Rama isn't telling him the whole truth, and Jenkins parallels Deadman's quest for answers with his attempt to help a disabled army veteran.

The first chapter is the best, recapping Deadman's many lives, and ends with the shocking step Deadman takes to get Rama's attention. Despite that Deadman sees Rama on an astral plane, however, that first chapter is mostly "realistic," and so it's jarring when the story's second chapter is a prolonged action sequence where Deadman fights vampires and werewolves trying to break into a supernatural bar (not, sadly, the Shadowpact's Oblivion Bar).

From there, the story's momentum is uneven -- it's interesting, for instance, to see Deadman's experience with a prisoner on Death Row, but the thread in which Deadman sets up the veteran to stop a weapons dealer is too unbelievable even for comics. Better are Deadman's prolonged conversations with the devilish Son of Morning and with Rama herself again, though the conclusion -- that Deadman will keep on working for Rama but with a bit more control than before -- puts Deadman back exactly where he was thought to be before the story started. The events of the five issues don't really affect Deadman at all, nor do they reflect in any way Deadman's other struggles in Hawk and Dove and Justice League Dark.

Dan DiDio's Challengers of the Unknown story suffers from some confusion from the start. These Challengers are meant to be low-grade celebrities on a reality show like Celebrity Apprentice, but it's clear from the beginning that some of them are celebrities and some of them are some sort of hosts who've worked together before, as perhaps the original Challengers of the Unknown, though this is never quite addressed.

DiDio's dialogue is fine, in that there's no hackneyed or stereotypical lines as in his Outsiders, but the story simply fails to distinguish itself. The new Challengers end up on a quest to find some mystical talismen, and at each stop -- predictably, by the end -- they fight monsters and one of their number is killed. The Challengers don't do much in the end to defeat their enemy, and (also predictably) they end up with four members left to try to seek out greater answers about what happened to them. It's always good to see artist Jerry Ordway's work, but in the last panel for some reason the characters seem rather blank-eyed and plain, and it stands for the story as a whole -- in the end, the Challengers are continuing on, but the audience won't feel all that compelled to follow them.

DiDio is a team player in that he very mildly tied his OMAC series to the Challengers story, and also gives a shout-out to Ian Edginton's National Comics: Looker, but given that both of those series are also cancelled, there's an overall sense in DC Universe Presents that this is a corner of the New 52 DC Universe that just isn't quite working.

For the Deadman fan who has everything else, Paul Jenkins's story in DC Universe Presents Vol. 1 deserves a place on their shelf. Otherwise, of all the DC Comics New 52 debut, this is one most others could probably set aside.
